After a week of political tension, the Senate approved a major funding package on Friday with 71 votes in favor and 29 against. The legislation includes five regular appropriations bills and a two-week continuing resolution for the Department of Homeland Security.
The measure will not take effect before midnight, triggering a temporary shutdown of most federal agencies, including Pentagon operations, until the House of Representatives validates the agreement. The House is scheduled to vote Monday after a Sunday meeting of its Rules Committee to organize the process, which requires a two-thirds majority and substantial Democratic support.
The budget faces possible opposition in the House, particularly from hardline conservatives who have signaled they will reject any Senate amendments. Some Democrats have also raised objections to continued funding for certain migration programs. They are demanding measures including an end to roving patrols, stricter rules for home searches in immigrant households, prohibiting the use of masks by agents, and requiring proper identification and body cameras.
If the House approves the package, it will be sent to President Donald Trump for signature, ending the shutdown. Weekend shutdowns of this kind are relatively common and less disruptive than the 43-day closure from October 1 to November 12, 2025, the longest in U.S. history. Nearly half of the 21 shutdowns in U.S. congressional history have lasted three days or fewer.
The outcome of Monday’s House vote will determine whether this weekend shutdown remains a brief procedural pause or escalates, highlighting persistent divisions over federal spending and migration enforcement.
